The design of traffic island elements at exits of motorway connectors is problematic due to the limited space available.
Within the R&D Project SAFETy co-funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation, and Technology traffic safety and noise-protection at exit and entry traffic island elements on highways has been improved. The solution considers the area of conflict between noise protection and traffic safety.
Traffic safety investigations and noise measurements have been carried out for exemplary motorway connectors in Austria at Baden, Kottingbrunn and Böheimkirchen. In a comparison of different arrangements of noise protection systems in the area of entrances and exits, the increases in safety and reductions of noise pollution have been examined. In the framework of a traffic safety investigation, the optimal design of the traffic island elements for different connector types has been developed.
