HAK Launches Enhanced SMS Support on Emergency Number 1987 – a Communication Solution to Address the Needs of Individuals with Disabilities

The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) has introduced a new SMS assistance service on the emergency number 1987, designed to better support people with disabilities, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Now users can send an SMS to 1987 with their location, vehicle details and description of the problem to quickly receive roadside assistance.

This change simplifies previous procedures by making 1987 the single contact number for all users, whether by voice call or SMS, enhancing accessibility and service recognition. The update aligns with new European regulations requiring emergency services to improve communication accessibility for people with disabilities.

Additionally, HAK is the first in Croatia and among the first in Europe to be technically ready to introduce Real-Time Text (RTT) on 1987 – a new technology enabling live text communication during voice calls for faster, clearer emergency interactions.

HAK emphasises that calls or SMS to emergency numbers automatically share the caller’s location with call takers. This initiative highlights HAK’s commitment to improving safety and support all road users.
