The G C School of Careers

What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

The G C School of Careers commits to undertake preventative actions concerning road accidents for the next three years.
Our priority is the safety of our students, as one of our students died in a car accident last August due to speeding at night after the consumption of alcohol and we all wish not to suffer again such a loss. Our mission is to make every possible effort to prevent and reduce traffic accidents, targeting young people aged between 15-19 years old. In 2010, 30% of those who lost their lives in road accidents were under the age of 25. 43% of the motorcyclists who died were less than 25 years old. Of all those who died in road accidents, 43.33% were under the influence of alcohol. 30% of all accidents are due to speeding.
We will organize several road safety lectures. Our first lecture will be by Lieutenants of the Police Traffic Department, who suggest ways of improving road safety. We will also organize a lecture by a well-known Cypriot Road Safety Advisor who attempts to send his message through several shocking videos. We will organize a discussion with people who have been severely injured in car accidents, and close relatives of young people who lost their lives in road accidents. We will visit the road safety Park of the Police Traffic Department, as well as attend “Road Safety of motorcyclists in Cyprus”, a conference organized by the British Embassy. We will have a day dedicated in presenting the findings of our research to students and teachers.
We commit to establish on a yearly basis a Road Safety Week which will include lectures, activities/projects, quizzes and actions. Our approach to road safety will be an “aggressive prevention” and it is organized and supported by the Road Safety Committee of our school in cooperation with our Research Team which includes students as well as teachers. Our activities will be in cooperation with government and private agencies which are specialized on youth road safety.
