To warn road users of a danger on a road section, for instance following an accident, and to divert the traffic in a safe direction, traditionally wind-powered torches made of wax material are used. This solution implies some relevant road safety problems. First, exposure and risks for operators, on one side of being hit by vehicles while torches are placed on the road surface and turned on, on the other side of being wounded by open flames. Furthermore, damage of the asphalt on which torches are placed during use, compromising its useful time, and lack of practicality since they are made of fibrous materials and wax and can’t be extinguished even if no longer needed.
Every year road workers and emergency operators are injured or killed while deploying temporary warning devices in live traffic environments. Flash-Led was conceived to eliminate this exposure by enabling remote deployment of warning systems and significantly improving operator safety.
The present invention relates to a road signalling system aimed to substitute the traditional use of wind-powered torches, allowing an effective signalling of danger and/or obstruction and/or traffic channelling, ensuring the complete operators safety, avoiding infrastructure damages and, furthermore, informing road users through road navigation platforms. The Flash-Led executive project has been entrusted to a team of excellence in the sector constituted by AI VIEW Group srl, a leader in innovative technology services, it designs and develops specific software and algorithms using advanced AI systems, and Nexi Sistemi srl, which designs fully customized hardware and software technological systems, operating in synergy with national partners in the IT, electronics and defense sectors. Besides, as regards integration of lights, communication systems and their application for management and algorithms of Artificial Intelligence, AI VIEW Group srl and Nexi Sistemi srl collaborate with the Robotics Department of University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome. A35 Brebemi – Aleatica and All.V.iN srl.
Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.
A35 Brebemi – Aleatica, in cooperation with All.V.iN srl, started Flash-Led preliminary studies in 2023 and in December 2024 a national patent with number 102024000028638 was filed.
In 2025 a PoC – Proof of Concept was developed with the purpose of demonstrating the technical and operational feasibility of the invention in a real context; in this regard, the design concerned the mechanics, electronics, software and firmware. Besides, an international patent application was filed in December 2025.
The rapid evolution from the initial concept to patent protection, proof-of-concept development and prototype construction demonstrates a strong commitment to transforming road safety operations through automation, robotics and intelligent signalling technologies.
At the beginning of 2026 the executive project of Flash-Led started: it has been entrusted to a team of excellence in the sector involving AI VIEW Group srl and Nexi Sistemi srl, design firms leader in technology services, and the Robotics Department of University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome, regarding algorithms of Artificial Intelligence and communication systems. As of today, the first prototype of the invention is under construction with the aim of crushing the system by the end of the Summer. After the necessary tests, the prototype will be road tested by the Highway Police on three different highway concessionaires by the end of 2026.
The product industrialization is expected at the beginning of 2027.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?
During the system development, several limiting factors were addressed:
- the system must not constitute an obstacle to traffic in case of impact, including collisions involving motorcycles, and in the event of breakage, the projection of individual fragments must not pose a hazard to vulnerable road users;
- dimensional constraints, arising from the need to accommodate the case, containing the Flash-Led rovers, in Highway Police cars, specifically within the compartment currently occupied by the wind-powered torches container;
- system’s required autonomy, which must not be less than 6 hours (corresponding to a single Police shift) even if supported by small batteries;
- motors and wheels typologies, which, within dimensional constraints, must be able to support rovers movements on different kind of surfaces, maintaining road grip and overcoming obstacles;
- weight constraints, arising from the need to move the case easily by one person;
- economic sustainability, given that rovers might be impacted by vehicles and so replaced or fixed;
- trolley-rovers communication, which must be ensured and remain effective even in the absence of a cellular network, preventing potential interference and ensuring electromagnetic compatibility.
The Flash-Led executive project has considered all the above aspects in order to obtain a safe and efficient system. All these engineering constraints were systematically addressed to ensure that Flash-Led is practical, safe, cost-effective and ready for deployment in real highway operating conditions.

The positive road safety implications introduced by the Flash Led system will be disclosed by the inventors through multiple channels, so that all road users can be educated about the operation and characteristics of this new tool.
Those who will use in practice the Flash Led system will be the Highway Police and traffic assistants who intervene in case of a danger on a road section, such as for accidents, road obstacles or re-direction of traffic. Dedicated courses will be given to these operators to learn how to best use the system and manage its functionality; at the end of the road testing period that will take place after summer 2026, operators involved in the activities will be given surveys to detect any observations, opportunities for system improvement or critical issues.

What has been the effect of the activities?
In terms of road safety, the Flash LED system will have the important merit of allowing the signalling of dangerous road sections, preventing operators from being exposed to the risk of being hit by vehicles approaching at high speeds and in any weather conditions (poor visibility, bad weather, etc.). In fact, thanks to Flash Led, operators will be able to control the deployment of rovers, according to schemes consistent with the highway code or as needed, remotely, remaining in a safe position in the emergency lane. Therefore, the system will certainly have an important impact in terms of reducing accidents, injuries and deaths among road operators who intervene to demarcate the area in case of emergency. Although the system is currently in the prototype and testing phase, preliminary assessments indicate that Flash-Led can eliminate the need for operators to enter live traffic lanes during the deployment of temporary warning devices. This represents a significant reduction in occupational risk compared with traditional solutions currently in use. The invention is destined for international diffusion as it can be adopted on roads around the world by public bodies and motorway concessionaires that wish to install it on their cars, thanks to the practicality, effectiveness and sustainable cost that will characterize it. The Flash Led system is configured as complementary to the activities carried out by operators, as it integrates into existing operating flows as an auxiliary tool, improving their efficiency and accuracy.
Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.
In terms of road safety, the Flash Led System addresses a very important and deeply felt real issue for professionals in road safety and traffic, that is, the safety of operators who intervene to signal hazardous situations on the road. They are exposed to the mortal risk of being hit by vehicles approaching at high speeds during the installation, replacement and withdrawal phases of traditional wind-powered torches. This is evidenced by annual road accident statistics and represents a highly critical aspect of road safety, as operators are intentionally exposed to investment risk to deal with wind-powered torches signalling.
Flash-Led demonstrates how automation, robotics and connected mobility can be used to solve a long-standing road safety challenge. The concept is simple, scalable and easily transferable to motorway operators, public authorities and road managers worldwide.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?
Since the Flash Led system executive project is being finalised, its dissemination has begun a few months ago, mainly through direct contacts with the Police Authority and with other motorway operators; in particularly, two of them will take part directly to the road tests of Flash Led prototype at the end of Summer 2026.
More recently, the Flash Led system has been publicly presented during the ASECAP Days 2026 in Bratislava and as part of this event the invention was awarded the prize “Automated Systems for Temporary Roadworks and Safety on Motorways - IÖB Innovations platform”. In the international audience of the event, the invention aroused a lot of interest. The recognition received during ASECAP Days 2026 represents an independent validation of Flash-Led's relevance and innovation potential within the European road safety community.
During Summer 2026, A35 Brebemi and All.Vi.N srl are planning to share more information about the Flash Led system development.
