Initiative details
The 'EuroTarn' Association was set up in 1997 (by myself) to encourage young people to discover the countries of the European Union, and thus learn about other European cultures and languages. The association's motto from the outset was to inspire young people to 'move in a moving world'.
Between 1997 and 2007, we developed Universities exchanges with various regions. In 2007, we created some actions to attract young people (in the Tarn area) to be more interested in Europe, and to develop their 'European citizenship' and their feeling of belonging to a same European community; And Road safety was one of the very first topic that we decided to tackle with the very first European day of Road safety in April 2007. Therefore we decided to run campaigns to talk about Road safety and... Europe, and we decided to start to visit schools to educate young people.

Project activities
If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.
The most important partner for sure is the town of ALBI (approx. 60 000 inhabitants, close to Toulouse).
We are closely working with the town mayor and her departments. We have regular catch-up meetings and we are progressing very well.
Depending on the campaign, we are also requesting some materials from some private partners (e.g Michelin, Peugeot, Decathlon,...)

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.
Having worked in the automotive sector for many years, I'm fully committed for better road safety. On a personal and completely voluntary basis, I wanted to continue working on this subject with EuroTarn Association. I would like to say and insist first on that our association is made up of volunteers who are committed to this challenge in addition to their professional and private lives.
1/. The main objectives was to visit some schools and develop actions with young people. We launched numerous awareness-raising actions carried out in schools (e.g. wearing a helmet when cycling) and at the Centre Universtaire d'Albi (e.g. distribution of 'flyers' on alcohol consumption). For this we developed various supports and tools.
We also launched a drawing competition and a written challenge for students.
On a regular basis, we publish articles in the press and present European funding programs for companies and local authorities, with a road safety module.
2/. We invited European personalities to speak about road safety (Mr. Ari Vatanen, former pilot and European Parliament rapporteur on road safety (2016); Mr. E. Krug, Director of Road Safety at the WHO (2020); Ms. A. Valean, European Commissioner for Transport (2020). more recently, Jean Todt as the UN Special Envoy on Roqd safety.
3/. In addition to this, the association took part in some European significant initiatives like the first European Road Safety Day or the European Day for Young People and Road Safety (24/11/11). Every year, EuroTarn is active for the Sustainability mobility week (usually in September).

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?
In addition to our awareness-raising actions, we initiated the creation of the European Center for New Mobilities in 2018 (called ABILITY), which has a real look at road safety issues, because tomorrow's mobility can only be low-carbon, digital, accessible and above all safe.
We invited the EC commissioner for transport who delivered a speech at the pre-launch meeting of the European Centre for New Mobility in Albi in September 2020. This Center has mainly 3 pillars: Energy 5mainly with Hydrogen and electric modes), Digital (Automated cars,...) and Safety.

Evaluation
Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).
Regarding schools, we developed a community of 64 schools and Learning Institutes. We are in regular contact with then and we are answering to their questions and demands on a weekly basis.
What has been the effect of the activities?
I think that people we talk to are now considering even more the Road safety challenges and what Europe is doing for this topic. Road safety and European efforts were the 2 dimensions that we wanted to tackle since day one.
EuroTarn is now existing for the past 30 years, and we are developing Road safety actions for the past 20 years or so. Therefore directly or indirectly we touched upon 120 000 young people. Many fatalities are unfortunately taking place on Saturday nights (after night clubs parties), we produced some flyers to educate the youngest drivers. We can notice some reductions of road fatalities during some specific period of time but it is difficult to be more precise.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.
As part of this project described below, we are organizing a competition for solar and electric vehicles, the “Albi Eco Race”, the aim of which is to highlight the potential of electric motorization, both through the use of new energy sources such as solar solar generators and fuel cells, as well as solutions for optimizing consumption and performance.
The Eco Race features five levels of challenges (aimed at young people in particular), a programme and round-table discussions, an Advenir training course on the challenges of the electric vehicle
all over three days, in May with the aim of welcoming around 800-1000 people on the Albi circuit, which is an ideal location.
During 3 days, this event give young people the chance to rub shoulders with the teams and drivers of the prototype solar electric and hydrogen cars that will be the means of the future. Teams are competing in several events: match racing, speed,
endurance and handling.
This not-for-profit event is supported by our association in a competition open to the the world, with more than 5 countries taking part, and focused on the future of mobility.
We believe that our message on Road safety is even stronger if we match it with 'ecology/green behaviour'.
Developing a 'Road safety' hub inside the city, with a direct access for young people, is really the good receipe. This what we managed to create with this new 'Mobility center' (Ability). We could really duplicate this experience in another region/Member state, and we can help for this.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?
This point is a good one; it's fair to say that all those actions described above are completely on a VOLUNTARY BASIS; It's about working at night on it, on Saturdays, on Sundays.... it has been difficult to develop social media tools ... we would like to have one full time person on this.
So far we are using the communication dpt of the city of Albi, and we are sending regular information to the local newspapers (La Depêche, Le Tarn Libre, Le Journal d'Ici,...).
We are also in contact with the local TV (France 3 Région Occtinanie-Tarn) and radio (Rd'Autant, ...)...
Plan for the future:
-Recruiting a full time job to coordinate our action at local level
-We would like to appoint one 'Road safety ambassador' in all schools.
-We would like to develop MoU with various private partners which are already helping us.
-We would like to work closely with the Prefecture and to become 'Intervenant départemental de sécurité routière - IDSR'
