Traffic accidents represent a major social problem. In 2025, 93 people died on Slovenian roads, which is 25 more than in 2024. One of the main causes of traffic accidents remains inappropriate speed. The initiative addresses one of the key road safety challenges: how to identify road sections where risky driver behaviour occurs in time, before this is reflected in traffic accidents. Traditional planning of road safety measures is often based primarily on statistics of accidents that have already occurred. This approach is important, but mainly reactive.
The DRAJV Map introduces a more preventive approach. It is based on anonymised and aggregated telematics data from users of the DRAJV mobile application, which detects speeding, phone use or phone movements while driving, harsh acceleration, harsh braking and excessive cornering forces. These data provide insight into actual driver behaviour on individual road sections.
A specific challenge addressed by the initiative is also the lack of a single tool that would connect different road safety data sources. The DRAJV Map therefore combines telematics data on users’ drives, collected through the DRAJV mobile application, publicly available data on the locations of kindergartens and primary schools, and official police statistics on traffic accidents. This enables local communities, schools, researchers, non-governmental organisations and decision-makers to identify risks more comprehensively and to plan measures for safer roads on a stronger data-driven basis.

In developing the DRAJV ecosystem, we work with external partners from the fields of safe mobility, geoinformatics, data processing and digital solutions.
The Automobile and motorcycle association of Slovenia (AMZS) participated in developing the driving scoring algorithm and in testing the application at a safe driving centre and in real traffic. Their expertise was important in defining the criteria for safe driving for cars and motorcycles.
The University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, played a key role in the methodological preparation of the DRAJV Map. Together, we developed an approach for spatial analysis, anonymisation, aggregation and the preparation of data layers that enable the public publication of data without revealing the identity of individual users. The involvement of an academic institution is also important because the methodology is described in a peer-reviewed scientific publication and can be used for further research.
The Slovenian technology company Flycom Technologies participated in the technical implementation of the web GIS application, the back-end geoinformation system and the display of data layers in a user-friendly web interface.

The DRAJV mobile application is one of the more popular applications in Slovenia and represents a telematics tool for encouraging safer driving. The application records speed, phone usage, and harsh acceleration, braking and cornering events. After each drive, the driver receives a score and feedback, together with advice for improving driving habits, which encourages calmer and more responsible driving.
The application can also be used by motorcyclists, who are among the most vulnerable road users. For this purpose, we specifically adapted the driving scoring algorithm, as the dynamics of motorcycle riding differ from driving a car.
The key development step followed in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, we carried out a project to prepare the data collected through the DRAJV mobile application for public publication. We analysed, anonymised and aggregated data on the locations of speeding events, harsh acceleration, braking and cornering events, and the locations of phone use while driving, and assigned them to individual road sections.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?
In implementation, the connection between the benefit for the individual user and the broader social value of the data worked very well. The DRAJV application provides drivers with direct feedback, a driving score and the possibility of a fairer insurance premium, as safe driving allows them to prove that they are lower-risk drivers. This encouraged mass and continuous use of the application, through which users have already driven more than 2 billion safe kilometres. This was crucial for creating a sufficiently large database on which the DRAJV Map is based.
The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between the usefulness of the data and the protection of users’ privacy. Driving data are sensitive, so they cannot be publicly displayed as individual routes or raw GPS traces. We solved this challenge through multi-level anonymisation, aggregation and generalisation of the data. The data are displayed as aggregated events on road sections or spatial areas, classified into several categories according to the frequency of individual events.
At the same time, the data displayed on the DRAJV Map are publicly available for download and further use with attribution of the source, thereby encouraging their use in research, transport infrastructure planning and the preparation of road safety measures. Each data download also includes methodological documentation that enables users to correctly interpret and use the data.

We monitor the impact of the initiative through several types of indicators: use of the DRAJV application, use of the DRAJV Map, data downloads, stakeholder feedback, media presence, professional presentations and concrete examples of data use. Since 2015, we have recorded more than 2,200 media mentions related to the DRAJV mobile application and DRAJV map, including more than 560 mentions in foreign media, confirming project's broader impact in promoting safe driving.
The DRAJV application has a strong user base. It has been downloaded by more than 170,000 users, and more than 65,000 active users use it monthly. Together, they have recorded more than 80 million drives and more than 2 billion safe kilometres of driving in real traffic. This scale of use confirms that it is a statistically significant source of data on driver behaviour.

Particularly important is the transition from data to concrete measures. One example is the installation of 48 interactive speed display signs near schools, where DRAJV Map data helped identify areas where additional preventive measures were needed. This proves that the map is not merely an informative display, but a decision-support tool.
The data are also used by Zavod VOZIM in the implementation of Technical Days at primary schools across Slovenia. With the help of the map, pupils analyse the surroundings of their school, identify risky road sections and prepare action plans for improving road safety, which they present to local decision-makers. So far, 7 Technical Days have been carried out.
DRAJV data were also used on state-level by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency to identify 5 critical road sections. Proposed infrastructure changes were prepared and are subject to implementation.
The initiative has also received professional recognition. In 2024, the DRAJV Map received two “WEBSI” event awards: 1st place in the Data Use category and 3rd place in the Digital Tools category. WEBSI is an event, where the digital achievements of Slovenian creators are highlighted, presented and awarded.
