Who is the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK), and what is your role as a Charter Ambassador?
The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) is a national service association for automobile clubs, drivers, vehicle owners, and citizens in Croatia. Operating as a public association and NGO within the public authority framework, HAK coordinates and promotes road safety initiatives nationwide.
HAK supports preventive and educational activities for all age groups, encourages cooperation between local partners and public authorities, and contributes to the Vision Zero objective of reducing road fatalities.
Why did you decide to join the European Road Safety Charter?
HAK joined the European Road Safety Charter to strengthen efforts to reduce Croatia’s high road fatality rates through prevention. The Charter provides a European platform to support national road safety actions, promote shared values, and reinforce a culture of responsibility among road users.
What are your main focus areas and current projects?
Our work focuses on four key challenges: driving under the influence, speeding, non-use of seat belts, and distracted driving. Activities are designed to be practical and engaging for all age groups.
Since 2017, HAK has delivered the “KLIK – Seat belt, a habit of responsible behaviour” programme for secondary school students. This is complemented by initiatives for children, older road users, and, more recently, a new e-scooter safety programme aligned with Vision Zero goals.
Who do you collaborate with?
HAK works nationwide with schools, the Ministry of the Interior, traffic police, and automobile clubs, as well as European partners including FIA Region I, CITA, CIECA, and iRAP.
A recent example is the “10 Golden Rules” contest, developed with national media, educational institutions, and public authorities, helping extend the reach and impact of road safety messages.
What advice would you give to organisations working on road safety?
Focus on prevention through education and awareness. Consistent preventive actions lead to a safer environment for all road users and ultimately saves countless lives.
