What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

The actions to be taken focus mainly on shaping the public roads as a safe place for all road users. Traffic politics aim to maximize the share of public transport of the modal split. The yearly collision statistics for Vienna are used as an indicator for that. The activities on road safety are based on local accident researches, computer-supported and following highest scientific standards.

The city of Vienna renews its commitment with the following projects:

1) Safe way to school: The project "maps of the ways to all elementary schools" will be accomplished by 2011, all elementary schools will be fit up with a map by then. The evaluation of the maps will however go on after that and potential accident black spots will be redeveloped immediately.

2) In 2009 a project to improve safety of elderly cyclist was launched. In free trainings people of this age class are taught how to participate safely as a cyclist in modern large city traffic. Every year 6 trainings will be offered.

3) The project "Caution Zebra" ("Achtung Zebra") aims to raise awareness among drivers how to approach a zebra crossing correctly (careful driving, readiness to break) on the one hand, and on the other hand to impart correct behaviour before stepping on a zebra crossing to pedestrians (paying attention to the traffic, looking for eye contact). The City of Vienna provides comprehensive information at a prominent spot on its website on zebra crossings. Furthermore awareness-raising activities right at zebra crossings throughout the city take place (at least 10 times per year): Road users are addressed directly regarding their behaviour.

Duration of commitment: 3 years.
