What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety? 


To proactively pursue a local target of reducing the incidence of road deaths and serious injuries in the London Borough of Bromley by at least 50% by 2010 from the average rate in 1994/98 as a extension of the London Road Safety Target of 40%.
” This target will be achieved through the use of a range of attitudinal, educational and engineering methods. To compliment the implementation of traffic calming schemes, speed reduction technology, home zones, 20mph Zones and other area based treatments we will be utilising the following techniques:
CYCLING Through the council’s ‘Bikewise’ programme, reach 95% of 11 to 13 year olds with cycle training courses, as well as continuing to offer Adult Cycle Training courses. Further activities relating to encouraging cycle use, cycle safety and maintenance will be focussed through the National Bike Week and EU Mobility Week campaigns.
DRIVER-ORIENTATED COURSES


Reach at least 33% of 16 to 17 year olds with pre-driver traffic education training


Continue to run Driver Theory, Manoeuvrability, Advanced Driving and Minibus Safety courses throughout the year • Reduce number of child car accidents through the work of Bromley’s Car Seat Advice Centre, averaging around 500 appointments a year


Accident Prevention for Motorcyclists and other powered two-wheeler drivers through training courses, including advanced motorcyclist training, and educational programmes in school targeting young moped and scooter riders

ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS Out of the 50,000 students in the municipality we aim to reach:

70% of 13 to 15 year olds


90% of 11 to 12 year olds


60% of 9 to 10 year olds


45% of 5 to 7 year olds This equates to almost 26,000 children each year.

SCHOOL TRAVEL PLANS AND SAFER ROUTES TO SCHOOL
40% of schools in the municipality to have sustainable travel plans by 2006, the remainder aimed to be in place by 2010. Continue with engineering and attitudinal work on an individual or area-based level through the Safer Routes to School programme, treating between 6 and 9 schools each year.
In addition to the methods currently employed we will be looking to learn from, set and disseminate best practice in the UK and Europe through local and pan-European networks such as the London Access Group, The National Travelwise Association (UK) and ACCESS-EUROCITIES.
