Blicki's Wimmelbox-Workshop

Initiative details

The origin of our non-profit association was a tragic accident: A preschooler got under a waste disposal truck with his bicycle and died. We subsequently founded Blicki e.V. in 2017 with the mission of sensitizing children to the dangers of road traffic early on. With the program "Blicki blickt's" (Blicki sees it), over 100,000 primary school children nationwide have since been prepared for road traffic.

Besides children, senior citizens are a second vulnerable target group: almost half of those injured in accidents in Germany are over 65 years old. However, conventional prevention projects have difficulty reaching this target group.

This is how the idea for Blicki's Wimmel-Workshops (Busy Picture Workshops) came about: Learning together and across generations – for greater safety in road traffic. Children and their grandparents learn together with Blicki. The children become "Guardian Grandchildren" and pass on their knowledge. At the same time, grandparents become role models for their grandchildren with Blicki's superpowers of consideration, caution, and foresight. A double safety gain across generations.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

In order to reach all levels of society, we want to keep the program free of charge for all daycare facilities.
That's why we have a wide-spread network of supporters:

The workshop's concept was developed with pre-school teachers and graphic designers as well as the publisher Dorling Kindersley.

The first workshops in Berlin, Bavaria, Saxony, and Brandenburg are under the patronage of the respective state premiers. The goal for the coming years is nationwide activity in all federal states.

In 2026, the Berlin city council funded Blicki Wimmelbox-Workshops 150 pre-school daycare centers across Berlin.
For 2027 we already have the support for 500 Blicki Wimmelbox-Workshops across Brandenburg state.

Blicki is also supported by companies and associations such as Daimler Truck, Veolia, Telekom Mobility Solutions, Consorsbank by BNP Paribas, the German Association of the Automotive Industry, and the D-School of the Hasso Plattner Institute

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Blicki's Wimmelbox Workshop is an interactive learning program accompanied by digital media for early traffic education in daycare centers.
The central tool is the Blicki Wimmelbox, containing materials for five learning units in which preschoolers and grandparents learn together—from safely crossing streets to navigating blind spots.

The Wimmelbox contains a hidden-object book with sticker sheet, a plush Blicki, materials for experiments and exploration games (e.g., a flashlight, a memory game), as well as informational materials for parents and grandparents. The core components are five thematic envelopes for the learning units. The package is rounded out with certificates, a guidebook for teachers, and digital content such as videos and the Blicki song.

As with all Blicki workshops, the children learn with Blicki, our smart kangaroo mascot, and his friends from Blicki Town. To ensure the knowledge sticks, we also translate traffic rules in the Wimmel-Workshops into entertaining stories, rhymes, songs, and movement games that inspire children. And very importantly: anchoring the knowledge in everyday life. This is where the Guardian Grandchildren action cards come into play.

Using 'Guardian Grandchild' action cards, the children deepen what they have learned together with their grandparents in everyday life.

The program concludes with a Blicki celebration at the daycare center where kids and grandparents get their Blicki certificate.

The pilot phase started beginning of 2025, the official roll-out at beginning of 2026.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

Before the official rollout, the workshop was extensively tested in several pilot daycare centers. Teachers consistently rated the project as pedagogically valuable and the accompanying material as practical. Feedback from these tests was incorporated directly into optimizing the Wimmelbox and the workshop.

The workshop is based on a methodical Blicki 3-phase approach. This approach was already recognized as particularly effective during an evaluation of the primary school program 'Blicki blickt’s' by the German Federal Ministry of Transport. The method focuses on sustainably anchoring what has been learned in the everyday lives of the target groups.

The biggest hurdle was to integrate seniors into the project. We overcame this obstacle by using the so-called "Grandchild Effect": most grandparents are interested in what their beloved once learn at pre-school. And the "Guardian Grandchildren" can share their knowledge with their grandparents by using Blicki "Guardian Grandchildren" action cards. This method was successfully integrated during our pilot phase.

The official roll out began at the beginning of 2026. By the end of this year, around 500 Blicki Wimmelbox Workshops will be finalized Germany-wide.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

A constant digital evalutation is ongoing: teachers fill out a digital feedback form. We integrate this feedback and ides right away, constantly refining the workshop's concept.

TV and radio stations already reported on the Blicki Wimmelbox-Workshops (see video here: https://blickitown.de/wimmelworkshop/)

What has been the effect of the activities?

Blickis Wimmelbox Workshop addresses two of the biggest risk groups in German road traffic: children on their way to school and seniors over 65. The latter account for a large proportion of traffic accident victims in Germany.

In 2026, the program will reach around 5,000 preschoolers and just as many grandparents in its first year afte roll-out—10,000 people sensitized to road safety across generations.

And we'll scale it up: for 2027 we already have the support for around 1000 Blicki Wimmelbox Workshops.

In terms of knowledge transfer we were very successful due to:

1. Playful, practical knowledge transfer

Instead of abstract traffic rules, Blicki's Wimmelbox Workshop conveys concrete behaviors through stories that children remember. Five thematic areas map the central risk situations: safely crossing streets (zebra crossings, traffic lights), visibility at twilight and in the dark, safe cycling, behavior around trucks and in their blind spots, as well as general attention in the traffic space. Rhymes, songs, movement exercises, and the hidden-object book as a central storytelling tool ensure that knowledge is anchored not only cognitively, but also motorically and emotionally.

2. The 'Guardian Grandchild' learning effect: knowledge that arrives in everyday life

Classic traffic education usually focuses on a few hours at daycare. The Wimmelbox workshop breaks this pattern: After each learning unit, each child receives a 'Guardian Grandchild' action card. With this, children go to their grandparents or 'heart-grandparents' in the neighborhood, practice together, and explain what they have learned - very simply on the way to the supermarket, the way to the sports field, etc. This role reversal - the child as a guardian grandchild and safety coach for the seniors - has two positive effects on both sides: The child experiences self-efficacy and consolidates their knowledge through passing it on; the seniors reflect on their own routines in road traffic and act as role models with Blicki's superpowers of consideration, caution, and foresight.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

1. Scalable, low-threshold format

The central learning tool of the workshops is Blicki's Wimmelbox - a physical box with the material for five learning units. The box is accompanied by digital content from Blicki Town. Blicki's Wimmelbox can be used by any daycare nationwide without the need for external trainers to travel. Teachers are trained through a webinar by our non-profit association. This makes the format cost-efficient and reproducible.

2. Sustainability and longevity of the learning materials

All learning materials are high-quality and sustainably designed and produced. A refill set makes it possible to carry out several runs with different groups of children per year. And Blicki's Wimmelbox can thus even be used in the following years. This is how we reach many children.

5. Impact beyond the daycare

With central closing events such as the Wimmel event at the Leipzig Zoo on June 5, 2026, Blicki's Wimmelbox workshop becomes a public, visible experience. Children, parents, seniors, and daycares meet and network. Road safety thus becomes not only knowledge, but a lived community task that is anchored in society.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

With over 2,000 followers on Instagram (@blicki_e.v) as well as a presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube, Blicki strengthens its visibility and sharing of knowledge around road safety. Regular positive press coverage from municipalities, schools, and companies confirms the high level of attention the project is receiving.
