Beloo - The Safety Cycling APP

Initiative details

The problem: 2,000 cyclists die each year on European roads and no effective solution.

The solution: Beloo, the first free safety app for cyclists that alerts GPS navigators or vehicle infotainment systems to the presence of cyclists on the road, in addition to other safety features.

This system allows lives to be saved by alerting vehicles in advance that they will encounter a cyclist or group of cyclists in the coming kilometers, reducing the possibility of an accident.

This project already has the support of cycling and triathlon federations, as well as private sector companies aware of cyclists' vulnerability.

We hope to protect millions of cyclists worldwide with the support of both European and international institutions.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Partners:

Governments and their traffic services: Andorra, DGT 3.0, receive our data and share it with all companies connected to their NAP.

Dissemination:

Cycling Federations: Balearic Islands Madrid, Catalonia, , Alava
Big cycling chain Stores: Bicimarket, Escapa,
Cycle-tourism companies: Bikefriendly
"Vias Verdes" (Greenways) entities from Cataonia and Spain

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Creation of a real-time cyclist data HUB (06/2024)
Creation Beloo app (FREE) (06/2024)
Integration with Andorra Mobilitat (06/2024)
Integration with DGT 3.0 (10/2024)
Integration with STEP (09/2024)
Integration with vehicle GPS navigators (2025)
Real-time data integration from Cycle-computers (2025)
Integration with cycling sports activity apps (2025)

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

Beloo is an innovative project that aims, for the first time, to bring together everyone involved in cyclist road safety at a single point.
This involves centralizing real-time data and being a neutral entity for all the companies involved, such as GPS navigators, fitness apps, vehicle manufacturers, governments... this is a Gran Fondo-style effort where the timings are sometimes too slow for such a necessary project without external or public funding.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

The result is being very positive in terms of app acceptance and usage.
97% acceptance in a survey among 13,000 federated cyclists.
6,000 new users in 24 hours with a single social media post.

What has been the effect of the activities?

-.30,000 cars alerted per month by our "cyclist on the road" alerts. (Data from GPS navigators)
-.Massive app usage among cyclists in Spain, the country where it was launched.
-.Downloads in 19 countries.
-.Data can be measured in the Apple and Google stores with a user rating of 4.5 out of 5.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

Beloo is the only current solution to reduce the 2,000 cyclist deaths in Europe, the only one that warns drivers of the presence of cyclists on the road via GPS navigators, integrated vehicle systems, as well as variable signage through integrations with, STEP, DGT 3.0
