Rules and regulations surrounding baby seats are important for the safety of your child and others on the road, so please ensure you stick to them to avoid any calamities. First and foremost it is imperative that that you have the correct sized baby chair for your child and it is installed correctly, it is estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Seat Check campaign that 7 out of 10 of car seats on the UK are not installed correctly, we urge you to not be another statistic. The rules vary in accordance with the age and weight of your child. If your child is under the age of 3 they must be seated in a rear-facing seat for as long as possible, which is normally until the child is just over one year old. The only exception for putting your child in a rear facing position is if the seat is protected by an airbag, and even then this should only happen as a last resort and if you’ve checked the cars handbook to ensure its safe. Once a child turns 3 years old, a booster seat must be used. And, this booster seat is to be used until the child is either 4ft 5in or is 12 years old. Under any other circumstance, it is illegal for a child to use an adult seat belt; this is because the position of the adult seat belt, in the result of a crash, may damage the child internal organs. Or they simply might slip from underneath the seatbelt. If you are in breach of these rules, you could be fined up to £500.
