This year marks 16 years since the loss, in a traffic accident, of our own Panos Mylonas… A loss that throughout these 16 years became a force, a struggle and a goal for improving the situation on the roads of our country. A struggle to raise drivers’ awareness, to educate young people and, mostly, to protect lives so that no one experiences the loss of loved ones.
The creation of the Road Safety Institute (R.I.S.) "Panos Mylonas" -- 16 years ago – but most importantly, it’s achievements so far, have been acknowledged and recognized, both in Greece and internationally, and the Institute has been distinguished by leading organizations in the world such as the UN, the European The Commission, the European Parliament (which has awarded the Institute the European Citizens Award), the European Transport Safety Council, the Swedish Government and other important Organizations.
All the people who have dedicated their energy and efforts without stopping for 16 years now, to the R.S.I. are very proud that, with the help of its’ supporters, the state, the sponsors but above all it’s volunteers have contributed, to the reduction of 54% -- in the last decade -- of fatal road accidents and by 63% of serious injuries caused in traffic accidents. We will all continue with devotion, for improving Road Safety conditions.
All the above reasons lead us to organize, on Thursday, September 9, 2021, an Anniversary Event, at the SNFCC (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Faros Hall) in order to renew our commitment which is fighting "for a world without road accidents".
The event is held under the auspices and the honorary presence of H.E. the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou in co-organization of the Institute with the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport and in cooperation with the Attica Region.
With the presence of H.E. the President of the Republic, Government Representatives as well as Heads of the Security Forces of our country, the event will also host prominent personalities from abroad, invited by the Institute, such as Jean Todt, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on Road Safety Issues and President of FIA (Fédération Internationale de l' Automobile), Matthew Baldwin, Deputy Director of DG MOVE, Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of ETSC (European Transport Safety Council), Michael Woodford, Executive Chairman of the Safer Roads Foundation (SRF), Prof. Claes Tingvall, the "founder" of the Vision Zero & Sustainable Development approach and Kurt Bodewig, President of the German Road Safety Association (DVW).
As part of the event, the “Τraffic Policeman of the Year Award” with an active contribution to the prevention of traffic accidents and the “Volunteer of the Year Award” with a significant contribution to the work of the Institute will be offered and, finally, relevant questions will be answered to journalists who will be invited.
