Too many pedestrians are being killed and injured on the world's roads. Yet implementing safety measures are cost effective and the solutions are simple. Often what's needed is as simple as a safe crossing point or a pavement.
The Second UN Global Road Safety Week from 6-12 May 2013 was led by the World Health Organization, UN regional commissions and members of the UN Road Safety Collaboration, and is dedicated to pedestrian safety. The week coincided with the second anniversary of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. In support of UN Global Road Safety Week “The Long Short Walk” brought together people and groups from around the world to call for action to protect pedestrians.
Make Roads Safe Hellas supported the campaign by organizing a short walk at some of the pedestrian crossings of Chania city, were the students of chess club “OAX” participated. The children delivered their own road safety messages and took a short walk. Also, Mr. Skoulakis, mayor of Chania city and Mr. Kouris, general secretary of the municipality, kindly supported the campaign by signing the board and giving a hopeful message for the safety of the pedestrians.
